How Many Miles Do Tires Last? The Answers, in the Order You'll Ask Them

Most passenger-car tires in the United States last 40,000 to 60,000 miles before the tread reaches 2/32 of an inch, the depth at which NHTSA says a tire is no longer safe and should be replaced. Long-wearing all-seasons go further: in Consumer Reports' on-road tread-life program, nearly half of the 15 all-season SUV tires tested projected to at least 65,000 miles, and four projected past 75,000. Ultra-high-performance tires and tires on heavy electric vehicles land lower, often 20,000 to 40,000. Mileage is only one of two clocks. NHTSA's tire aging summary notes that some vehicle manufacturers recommend replacement every six years regardless of use, and many tire manufacturers set a limit of ten, so a lightly driven set can expire with tread still on it.

The questions arrive in a fixed order once someone is crouched by a wheel, and the sections below follow it: tread, then age, then mileage, then which clock ends the set.

How much tread is left on my tires right now?

A tire is worn out at 2/32 of an inch of remaining tread depth in most states, and it was molded at the factory to tell you so without a gauge. FMVSS No. 139, the federal standard for new radial tires on light vehicles, requires at S5.4 that every tire carry "not less than six treadwear indicators spaced approximately equally around the circumference" that let a person determine visually whether the tire has worn to a tread depth of one sixteenth of an inch. One sixteenth is 2/32. Those are the small rubber bars buried across the bottom of the grooves. When a bar sits flush with the tread block beside it, that groove is finished; with six of them, the flush one decides, not the healthy one across the tire.

The figure I grew up with is 1.6 mm, the British legal minimum; FMVSS No. 119 writes that same depth as "1.6 mm (one-sixteenth of an inch)".

Most new passenger tires start at 10/32 or 11/32, so the usable budget is about 8/32 of an inch. A penny with Lincoln upside down reads 2/32 at the top of his head; a quarter reads 4/32 at the top of Washington's.

Wet grip is where the last few 32nds decide something. It has rained here for three days; I stopped checking whether it would clear somewhere around Tuesday, and the round is just wet now. NHTSA's research puts the sharp rise in tire failure in the 0-to-4/32 band, which is why the quarter test exists at all. I have seen that figure quoted more often than the table behind it, so I treat 4/32 as the point to start shopping rather than a number to argue with. Federal inspection criteria in 49 CFR Part 570 use 4/32 on front tires and 2/32 elsewhere, while stating that Part 570 imposes no requirement on any person and exists for states to adopt.

How old are my tires, and where is that written?

The last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall are the manufacture date: two digits for the week, two for the year. NHTSA's own example is 0308, meaning the third week of 2008. The clock starts there, at the factory, not on the day the tire went onto your car, which is why the code is worth reading before a "new" tire is fitted.

The complete Tire Identification Number is not always molded on both sidewalls. NHTSA notes the outer face may carry a partial string with the date sitting on the inner face, turned toward the vehicle. Turn the wheel to full lock and look at the inner shoulder. I hand new phones to people for a living, and the whole job comes down to one check: name, document, signature. I got it wrong once in a shared house in Bootle: right address, right first name, wrong man. The number you can read from where you happen to be standing is not always the number that identifies the thing.

A three-digit code means the tire predates 2000, and the conversation is over.

The age limit arrives as two numbers from two parties. NHTSA's tire aging summary reports that some vehicle manufacturers recommend replacement every six years regardless of use, while a number of tire manufacturers recommend ten. Michelin advises annual professional inspection after five years and replacement by ten; Continental says remove anything over ten, spare included. The California Assembly's 2009 analysis of AB 496, drawing on NHTSA's aging work, cited an insurer whose policyholders were 27% from Texas, California, Louisiana, Florida and Arizona but whose tire claims came 77% from those five states, 85% of them on tires over six years old. Heat is the accelerant.

How many miles have these tires actually done?

The mileage that matters is miles since installation, and the installer wrote it down. Shops record the odometer reading at fitting because tire warranties require it, so the invoice in the glovebox is the primary document. Without it, work backward from depth: a tire that started at 10/32 and now reads 6/32 has spent half its usable rubber.

To convert miles into years you need an annual figure. FHWA's Office of Highway Policy Information puts average annual miles per driver at 13,476, with age bands running from 7,624 for 16-to-19-year-olds to 15,291 for the 35-to-54 group. A different method, total vehicle miles traveled divided by licensed drivers, lands near 13,600 for 2022. The two disagree by enough that you should use your own number if you have one; about 13,500 is a fair stand-in if you do not. At that rate a 60,000-mile set is roughly four and a half years, and a 40,000-mile set about three.

My van does in a month what an average American car does in a quarter, and the miles are the wrong kind: doorstep rounds across Merseyside are short hops with heavy braking, twenty minutes parked in a hallway waiting for an activation to finish, then two miles to the next address. I get fewer miles from a set than the motorway drivers I know. That is thirteen years of rounds talking, not a measurement.

Which runs out first, the miles or the years?

For a driver covering 13,500 miles a year, the tread runs out first. Below about 10,000 miles a year, age runs out first, and the tire that looks healthiest is the one most likely to be retired with rubber still on it. This is the comparison that catches low-mileage owners, and it is arithmetic.

Take a set that reaches 2/32 at 60,000 miles from a 10/32 start, wearing evenly: 8/32 of usable depth, or 1/32 for every 7,500 miles. Run five drivers against the six-year mark many automakers publish:

The bottom rows are the second car and the pickup that only tows in summer. Rubber oxidizes and hardens under heat and time whether or not it rolls, and the odometer records none of it.

The extreme case is the spare. NHTSA's aging work notes that spares and other tires not in regular use seldom get replaced, and their structural integrity may be weakened while they still show a great deal of tread. Mine has been under the load floor since the van was new, unexamined until I wrote this paragraph and went to look at the date code.

Why is one tire worn worse than the other three?

Uneven wear comes down to alignment, pressure or missed rotations, and each leaves a signature you can read with your hand.

Ask for the alignment printout, before and after. Alignment is a measurement in degrees against a manufacturer tolerance, and a shop that will not hand over the numbers has not given you one. The correction does nothing for rubber already gone; the new set inherits a straight axle and the old set stays worn.

What actually makes a set last longer?

Pressure, rotation and alignment, and NHTSA puts a number on the first one: properly inflated tires can extend the average life of a tire by 4,700 miles.

Cold inflation pressure comes from the vehicle placard on the driver's door jamb, required under FMVSS No. 110, not from the number molded into the sidewall, which is the tire's maximum rather than your car's recommendation. Cold means the car has sat at least three hours, which is why I do this at the depot before the first drop, not at the end of a round when the tires are hot and read high.

Do not use the TPMS light as a maintenance schedule. FMVSS No. 138 requires the warning within 20 minutes of a tire falling to 25 percent below the placard pressure, or the standard's minimum activation pressure, whichever is higher. On a car placarded at 32 psi, the lamp is not obliged to light until about 24 psi. NHTSA's evaluation credited TPMS on 2004-to-2007 vehicles with a 55.6 percent cut in the likelihood of running a severely underinflated tire, which says nothing about the 3 psi you lose over a month.

On rotation, NHTSA's wording is exact: "If recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, rotate your tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles or sooner if uneven wear appears." Some cars cannot be rotated at all, because front and rear tires are different sizes. Keep the records either way; warranty claims ask for them.

The check takes five minutes, and the order matters:

  1. Check cold pressure before the first drive of the day, all four tires plus the spare, against the door-jamb placard.
  2. Read tread depth at inner, center and outer on each tire; the shallowest of the three is that tire's number.
  3. Read the DOT date code once a year and record it somewhere other than the tire.
  4. Log the odometer at fitting and at every rotation.

My tires were warranted for 60,000 miles and quit at 45,000. Do I get money back?

Some, rarely much, and only under conditions most drivers fail to meet. Treadwear warranties run from 30,000 to 100,000 miles, and Tire Rack's account of the mechanism is plain: the manufacturer prorates the unused fraction of the warranted mileage against what you paid, and issues it as credit toward the same or a comparable tire from the same maker. Not cash, and not a different brand.

The conditions are where claims die. Tires generally have to be worn to the treadwear indicators, at or very near 2/32, and usually all four of them. Warranties expire on time as well as mileage, typically four to six years from purchase. The claim is limited to the original owner on the original vehicle, needs proof of purchase and the mileage recorded at installation, and often needs evidence of rotation at the recommended intervals. Since sensible drivers replace before 2/32, the safe replacement point and the claimable one are not the same.

The three-figure treadwear number on the sidewall is not a mileage promise either. Under 49 CFR 575.104, the Uniform Tire Quality Grading rule, that grade comes from a convoy running a 400-mile government course near Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, Texas: 800 miles of break-in, then 16 circuits of about 6,400 measured miles, graded against a course monitoring tire and self-certified by the manufacturer. A grade of 700 means the tire wore at one-seventh the rate of the reference tire on that course in Texas. Consumer Reports drives 16,000 miles on public roads for its own projections, and notes warranty figures are set by manufacturers who may be conservative or aggressive for marketing.

Standing in a hallway, the question I am asked most is whether the old handset can go back right there, against the new one. People want the worn-out thing to be worth something. Tires pay about as well as phones do, and the invoice with the fitting mileage on it is the document every claim turns on: without it, the arithmetic has no start point.

The questions that come next

Is 30,000 miles good for a set of tires?

Below par for a standard all-season: warranties in that category commonly run 50,000 to 90,000, and Consumer Reports projects the better ones past 65,000. For an ultra-high-performance tire, a heavy EV, or a car with an alignment fault, 30,000 is ordinary. Check which of those you own.

Is 20,000 miles on tires a lot?

No. On a set that reaches the 2/32-inch limit at 60,000 miles, 20,000 miles uses about a third of the usable tread, leaving roughly 7/32 of an inch from a 10/32 start. Measure rather than assume. A misaligned axle can spend that entire third in one shoulder.

Is 40,000 miles good for tires?

It is average. Most passenger-car sets reach 2/32 of an inch between 40,000 and 60,000 miles, so 40,000 sits at the bottom of the normal band. If the set was warranted for 70,000, then 40,000 points at pressure, rotation or alignment rather than at the tire.

Can tires last 100,000 miles?

Yes, on the longest-wearing all-seasons. Treadwear warranties reach 100,000 miles, and Consumer Reports publishes projected mileages by model with the best all-seasons at the top of that range. Age usually intervenes first. At about 13,500 miles a year, 100,000 miles takes seven and a half years.

How long do tires last with low mileage?

Six to ten years, whatever the odometer says. NHTSA's tire aging summary notes some vehicle manufacturers recommend replacement every six years regardless of use, while many tire makers set ten. Rubber oxidizes and hardens with heat and time, so a car parked outside in Arizona ages faster than its mileage suggests.

How many miles do tires last on electric cars?

About 20 percent fewer. Michelin's own EV guidance states that an electric vehicle wears out a tire around 20% faster than a comparable combustion car, from battery weight, instant torque and regenerative braking. Kelley Blue Book puts typical EV tire replacement at 30,000 to 40,000 miles.
